The effect of propagation degree on seed-production value of spring barley

In 1989 to 1992 the effect of propagation degree on seed production values in the varieties Orbit and Novum was studied. Eight propagation degrees (S1, S2, S3, elite, original, reseeding, second reseeding, third reseeding) and 14 sorts of seeds (basic and reseeding ones) of various storage period (zero to three years) were compared. Examined characteristics were: 1,000-kernel weight, grain balance (portions of grains on individual mesh sieves) and germination capacity. Statistically highly significant differences were found out at 1,000-kernel weight among individual propagation degrees. at which the highest average value of 1,000-kernel weight (37.7 g) was reached by the degree S1. Statistically highly significant differences were observed also among the seeds and years. Evaluating the germination capacity no statistically significant differences were found out among the propagation degrees, as well as among seed sorts. Highly significant differences between the varieties were observed in advantage for the variety Novum, as well as among the years, with the same result.
