Dry country pines: provenance evaluation of the Pinus halepensis-P. brutia complex in the semi-arid region of south-east Australia

Material from 63 provenances was planted in 1968. After 14 years, P. halepensis had a bushier shape and denser crown but P. brutia had better growth and straighter stems. The height of P. halepensis at 4 and 6 years after planting was closely correlated to height and basal area at 14 years, but in P. brutia the correlations were poor. At 6 years, P. eldarica trees were tallest and straightest but by 14 years they were only slightly above average for height, straightness and branchform, although still vigorous in diameter growth. Several provenances of each species provided material with potential for woodlots or windbreaks.
