The Torres Strait pearling industry. [Seminar address]
1986
Yamashita, S. (Thursday Island Pearling Industry (Australia))
The pearling and pearl culture sections face grave problems. A massive oil spill in 1969 caused huge losses in the oyster population of the main pearling grounds. Despite this, fishing continued until 1977, by which time the stock had totally disappeared. A dive survey in late 1984 provided evidence that the grounds were gradually returning to a healthy state. If the supply of juvenile oysters could be assured, and Papua New Guinean divers could still find sufficient financial reward in working in the industry, then collection of mother-of-pearl and production of blister pearls would be an economically viable proposition.
