Control of Leveillula taurica mildew on pepper plants

The inhibitory effect of sodium and potassium bicarbonate (NaHCO3, KHCO3), horticultural oil and surfactant solution, were studied on pepper plants and fruits. All of the materials used in this studies significantly reduced the incidence of Leveillula mildew on plant foliage and Alternaria alternata on harvested fruits, compared with untreated controls. Potassium and sodium bicarbonate solution at a concentration of 0.5 achieved consistently better protection against pre- and post-harvest related diseases, compared with the commercial fungicide Penoconazole, horticultural oil or surfactant. A combined program of bicarbonates and various other products as a part of integrated Pest Management strategy might be more cost-effective, not harmful to environment and safe to use.
