Browsing damage in Tasmanian forest areas and effects of 1080 poisoning [Eucalyptus; Pinus radiata; wildlife; repellents]

Field and captive studies showed that browsing damage to Eucalyptus and Pinus radiata forests was mainly due to Macropus rufogriseus (Bennett's wallaby), with Thylogale billardierii (Tasmanian pademelon), Trichosurus vulpecula (common brushtail possum) and Oryctolagus cuniculus (rabbit) also contributing to the damage. The effects of 1080 poisoning on Tasmanian mammals in field and captive studies are given, and trials testing possible repellants are reported, of which, only a formulation based on egg powder was effective. The use of 1080 in controlling browsing damage is effective if laid before anticipated damage periods. Under present use in Tasmania, 1080 can be considered a safe poison.
