Experiment to determine the heterosis for grain yield and the grain yield component of hybrid rice (Oryza sativa) and the effect of each yield component on yield was conducted in Sukamandi in the wet season of 1985/1986, using a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Fifteen hybrids, five male parents (restorer), three female parents (maintainer) and one commercial variety (Cisadane) were grown in plot of 3 x 5 m with plant spacing of 20 x 20 cm and one seedling per hill. The heterosis values of the F1 hybrid were computed based on midparent, the highest parent (heterosis) and commercial variety (standard heterosis). A correlation and path coefficient analysis were made to determine the direct and indirect effects of yield component and yield. The best cross with the highest estimate of standard heterosis for grain yield was ZS97A/ Sadang. The other superior crosses were V20A/IR9761, V20A/IR26 and V20/IR54. Correlations between grain yield and number of unfilled grain per panicle, productive tiller, percentage of unfilled grain, 1000 grain weight were significant, but were not significant for panicle length. Yield was directly and positively affected by 1000 grain weight, directly and negatively affected by percentage of unfilled grain
