On the determination of the location and prospective of fishing ground for purse seine fisheries inside and roundabout Java Sea Waters

Due to the increasing unit and catch of purse seine fishing, the determination of the locations and its sustainable yield is a matter of importance especially to determine the optimum size of catch and unit of effort. This study is to locate the distribution of fishing grounds, to fix the fishing seasons and fishing efforts in the Java Sea waters and its roundabout for purse seine fisheries. This study is carried out by conducting a survey in a fishery rural district in Pekalongan, Central Java. The data of fishing catch, fishing ground or fishing area in which the catch is obtained, and numbers of fishing units being operated in certain fishing area were analyzed and interpreted to decide the optimum size of catch and efforts. The mathematical models from Schaefer and Gulland - Fox are used to determine the MSY (Maximum Sustainable Yield) and the optimum size of units of effort for the corresponding fishing grounds. This study concludes with the formations of nine location of fishing grounds in Java Sea waters and eight locations round about the Java Sea waters for purse seine fishery. It is also concluded that one of the fishing ground in the Java Sea waters and four of that outside the waters indicate overfishing. The optimum size of catch and efforts for its corresponding fishing ground are determined.
