To investigate the possibility of cultivating L. mutabilis in middle Europe, seed of different origins was made available. Flowering behaviour and variability of morphological characters were studied. Low alkaloid content and precocity were the main breeding objectives. Selections were made to improve precocity. A seed mixture containing grains with both high and low alkaloid content was obtained from South America. The plants with the lowest alkaloid percentages were selected and selfings were made in 1985. The protein content in the selected low-alkaloid material varied from 37 to 49 percent of dry matter, and the lipid content from 13 to 22 percent of dry matter.
