The role of monosaccharides in the process of freezing bull semen was studied. The following monosaccharides were tested: glucose, xylose, galactose, mannose. The factors which influence their action on spermatozoa were determined, and an attempt was made to elucidate the most probable mechanism of their cryoprotective effect. Studies were also carried out to follow up the influence of some combined saccharides. It was found that of all monosaccharides mentioned above, the most suitable one for bull semen is the glucose. Other monosaccharides displayed a less important cryoprotective influence. It is shown that multicomponents cryoprotective systems are more effectual in comparison with pure saccharides, taking into consideration the complementary cryoprotector they contain.
