Pathogenicity of the new phenotypes of Pseudomonas solanacearum from Peru. [Conference paper]

The pathogenicity of Peruvian strains of biovar 2 of P. solanacearum was determined using potato, tomato, tobacco, eggplant, tree tomato, Solanum nigrum and Datura stramonium. Except those isolates of phenotype B which did not cause wilt of tobacco, all strains elicited some host response. The reactions of tobacco and S. nigrum to inoculation with strains of biovars 1, 2 and 3 were differential. This demonstrated that phenotype A has a much wider host range than phenotype B. Phenotype A behaves similarly to isolates of race 1, due to its ability to induce a hypersensitive reaction and to cause wilt in tobacco. Phenotype B is therefore less related to phenotype A.
