Effects of soil nitrogen status and rate of inoculation on the establishment and populations of Bradyrhizobium japonicum and on the nodulation of soybeans

Irrigated soybeans on a grey clay soil were established on land previously cropped or previously fallowed. Mineral N was initially higher on fallowed soil, but was depleted more rapidly so that cropped soil had significantly higher levels after harvest. High levels of N reduced colonization of rhizospheres by bacteria, and plant nodulation; the effect was reduced, but not eliminated, by increased inoculation rates. Nodulation was also reduced at lower rates of inoculation.
