The crust-forming process is found experimentally to be versatile in relation to changes in slope, drop size and soil variation. However, stable particles of a size just movable on the surface by drop impact have a special place in the prevention of crust formation, by forming clusters that allow hydraulic penetration of water from impacting drops. Soil treatment to encourage the accumulation of such surface particles is a potential means of long-term avoidance of crusting.
