Short- and long-term chemical control of field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis L.) sprayed during summer and resultant crop yields

A field experiment was carried out using a range of herbicides at Freeling, South Australia. None of the treatments showed control of new stems of field bindweed in the next growing season and they did not increase the yield of wheat or barley. Glyphosate applied in 2 successive years at rates of 2.2 and 3.2 kg per ha resulted in an average 27 percent control of bindweed stems the year after final application, and increased wheat and barley yields. Imazypyr applied at 0.38 and 0.75 kg per ha in 1 year only showed an average 97 and 100 percent control in both the first and second year after application respectively, and 100 percent in the third. Wheat yield was reduced by 52 percent and 97 percent respectively due to residual imazapyr. Barley yield increased 80 and 60 percent respectively, the year following imazapyr treatments.
