Two major land management issues in Australia have emerged. Land degradation (erosion, dryland salting, build up of residues) and competition for water will dominate the agenda over the next two decades. The future for agriculture is uncertain because of changing circumstances and societal pressures for the adoption of more sustainable practices. The new generation of land managers and their advisors needs to adopt a new approach and embrace a land ethic. The resolution of Australia's major land management problems demands a review of the undergraduate programmes offered by the universities and colleges. The reasons for this are outlined.
