Tragowel Plains Research and Demonstration Block: Farm report, 1988-1994 [salinity control; irrigation areas; Victoria]
1995
Hammet, T. (Agriculture Victoria (Australia)) (comp.)
The Research and Demonstration Block at Tragowel Plains, northern Victoria, was established in 1987 with the aim of demonstrating salinity control techniques and water use efficiency on irrigation farms. Gypsum on annual pasture lands has ameliorated soil sodicity. Superphosphate has been shown to be optimum at an application rate of 210 kg per ha; with high frequency irrigation, sub clover yields in particular have been increased by over 240 percent. On perennial pasture that had been extensively landformed, a trial was abandoned due to poor establishment, but it is known that there is no way to make the exposed subsoil productive economically. Species and variety trials of annual clovers, especially sub clover, are reported; legume species are also being evaluated for soil salinity tolerance. Methods and species for revegetating very saline areas have been demonstrated, and cropping on raised beds tried. Future work will place more emphasis on economic analysis.
