Response of perennial leguminous cover crops in Malaysia to inoculation with Bradyrhizobium [in rubber plantations]

Pueraria phaseoloides and Calopogonium caerulum were inoculated with 3 strains of bradyrhizobia at 2 sites selected to represent new land and land being replanted, that is, low and high competition from naturalised soil flora. The soils at both sites had, in fact, surprisingly low populations of bradyrhizobia. P. phaseoloides formed more nodules and a greater weight of nodules than C. caerulum, but neither species showed growth improvement of practical significance. Increasing the inoculum potential about 100-fold increased nodule number per plant only from 3 to 4, and then only at the earliest harvest. Possible reasons for these apparent failures to achieve significant improvement are discussed.
