Inflorescence structure and evolution in the family Vitaceae

Surveys of inflorescence types have shown there is a progresive reduction within the family from cymose inflorescence to lamellate panicle. Cayratia and Tetrastigma have the cymose type, while Pterisanthes has the lamellate type and intermediates include Vitis, Ampelopsis and Ampelocissus. Tendrils associated with inflorescence occur in Ampelocissus and Pterisanthes. Another character of interest at generic level is the lamellation of the floral axes, which occurs in Pterisanthes and three species of Ampelocissus. The diversity of inflorescence structures in the Vitaceae was found to have both taxonomic and evolutionary significance
