The white lupin (Lupinus albus) collection (the only in Romania) at Livada Agricultural Research Station comprises a valuable germplasm, useful for breeding purposes. The main breeding requirements of this crop are the lowering of the alkaloid content and the high protein yield per surface unit, with a highest nutritional value. The simultaneous improving of the two characters is difficult to obtain due to the positive and negative interactions more or less marked, among the features, as well as the necessity for preservation of a minimal number of genes for an efficient self-defence. The use of both some selection features (like the protein yield per surface unit) and an adequate strategy based on recurrent selection principles will lead to genotypes with higher quality. The qualitative investigation of acid phosphatase and peroxidase revealed a more marked polymorphism in the late enzyme. The peroxidase and the alkaloid seem to influence in a positive way the plant defence against various pathogens.
