Biochemical characterisation of some white lupine genotypes

The white lupine (Lupinus albus) collection at Livada Agricultural Research Station comprises a valuable germplasm, useful for breeding purposes. The main breeding requirements for this crop are lowering of the alkaloid content and the achievement of high protein yields per surface unit, with a high nutritional value. The simultaneous breeding of the two characters is difficult due to the positive and negative interactions more or less evident among the plant characters, as well as to the necessity of preserving a minimal number of genes for an efficient self defence. The use of some selection indices, such as the protein yield per surface unit and of an appropriate strategy (based on recurrent selection principles) will permit the achievement of genotypes with superior quality. The qualitative investigation of acid phosphatase and peroxidase revealed a stressed polymorphism in the latter enzyme. The peroxidase and the alkaloid seem to influence in a positive way the plant resistance against various pathogens.
