Effect of chemical dehydration of alfalfa on haylage and hay quality

The authors found that 12 hydrochloric acid 10 sulphuric acid and 10 sodium hydroxide solutions led to an improved preservation of alfalfa as a major leguminous plant. A 200-1 alkaline or acid solution added to alfalfa effectively dehydrated the plant material over 1 ha of land; dry matter content of the plant reached 30 to 35 within four hours of treatment time. Chemical dehydration of alfalfa haylage and hay resulted in higher qualitative parameters as against traditional preservation methods: protein content was maintained at values close to the initial ones (19.2); carotene content ranged between 35 and 38 mg per 100g DM. With chemically treated alfalfa the amounts of sugars and the major essential amino acids lysine and tryptophan doubled in relation to traditionally preserved plants.
