Response of some winter wheat genotypes to late emergence

Late emergence of winter wheat, caused by insufficient moisture or low temperatures at sowing by delayed planting, is afterwards associated with lower yields. This study was conducted to evaluate the response of several wheat genotypes and to detect characters associated with tolerance to late planting. 25 genotypes were tested during three years with normal and late planting dates. To describe the response to delayed planting a tolerance index, similar to the one suggested by FISHER and MAURER for draught, was computed using yields from normal and late plantings. Our results suggest that there are significant differences among present Romanian wheat cultivars for the tolerance to late planting. The values of the index expressing the tolerance to late planting have shown acceptable repeatability among years and had heritability than yields obtained at late planting dates. Tolerance to late planting was significantly correlated with better emergence ability under unfavourable conditions, with shorter grain filling duration and with lower lodging resistance. Progress in breeding for tolerance to late planting or emergence can be expected by improving coleoptile length and seed vigour and shortening grain filling duration with concomitant increase in rate of grain filling
