Varietal identification. Review of molecular methodologies [cultivated plants]

English. Identification of cultivated species and varieties has been, and still is, carried out with the aid of morpho-agronomic characters. However, these characters are known to be influenced by the environment and are therefore not reliable. Use of molecular markers, on the other hand, such as proteins, iso-enzymes and DNA, allows more accurate identification as they are stable over time and show little environmental influence. In particular, use of DNA (RFLP, PCR, RAPD-PCR, etc.) allows reliable plant identification and makes it possible to solve practical problems such as certification, in that it detects the "fingerprint" of each individual. The present study makes a concise evaluation of molecular techniques, highlithing their advantages and disadvantages. In addition, plants to which these techniques have been applied are listed together with the corresponding bibliographical references

Italian. [L'identificazione, con l'ausilio di caratteri morfo-agronomici, di specie e varieta' coltivate e' stata effettuata ed e' tuttora in corso. Comunque, questi caratteri sono notoriamente influenzati dall'ambiente e non sono, pertanto, affidabili. L'uso di marcatori molecolari, d'altra parte, come proteine, isoenzimi e DNA, permette un'identificazione piu' accurata, dal momento che essi sono stabili nel corso del tempo e mostrano scarsa influenza dovuta all'ambiente. In particolare, l'uso del DNA (RFLP, PCR, RAPD-PCR, ecc.) permette un'affidabile identificazione della pianta e rende possibile risolvere problemi pratici quali la certificazione, in cui si riscontra "l'impronta" di ciascun individuo. Questo studio presenta una valutazione sintetica delle tecniche molecolari, evidenziandone vantaggi e svantaggi.
