Preservation of clover and grass genetic diversity

New technologies in agriculture and urbanistic intrusions diminish and change natural habitat of autochthonous species. Species of the genus Trifolium and Lolium which are the most exposed to these changes are threatened by genetic erosion. In 1990 characterisation and preliminary evaluation of autochthonous ecotypes of red clover (C) (T. pratense L.), zigzag C (T. medium L.), Hungarian C (T. pannonicum L.) and T. rubens L. was carried out in field trials. Similar trial with white C (T. repens L.) was conducted in 1993. All the red C ecotypes differ. The plants are shorter, their leaves are smaller and their estimated yield is lower than in the standard cultivars. According to leaf size the white C ecotypes belong to many different types. For the first estimates in 1994 certain ecotypes show higher yield than some cultivars. The plants of zigzag, Hungarian and T. rubens blossom only in the second year. Further investigations of applied value of these species are needed.
