Eight multiparous Franches Montagnes x Bardigiana mares, adapted to the experimental conditions, were studied during their first 18 weeks of lactation. Mares were hand milked every two hours (12 milkings/d); milk yield was daily recorded and twice a week sampled. Milk yield showed high individual variability and at 4th week of lactation it ranged between 3 and 5 kg/d. Milk fat content showed extreme values of 0.6% and 2.4% while higher values were found in protein content (min. 1.9%, max. 3.4). Variations of these parameters were also detected between millings. Higher stability was found in titrable acidity, pH of milk and total solids and lactose milk content. Data showed high contents of long chain fatty acids (60% of total fatty acids), particularly of omega 3 and omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acids
