The effect of alternating intensity of nitrogen fertilization on the quality of semi-natural grassland, 1: The fibre and protein content

The influence of graduated and alternating nitrogen rates applied with phosphorus and potassium during 2 experimental years on changes of fiber and crude fiber contents in dry matter was examined in a semi-natural Lolio-Cynosuretum typicum grassland during a 4-year cycle. No substantial differences in the fiber content (considered to be important parameter of feed quality) between sward covers regularly intensively fertilized with nitrogen (variants 5 and 14) and those with periodic alternation of PK and intensive nitrogen fertilization (variants 8, 9, 10) were found. In the 1st case, concentration of fiber reached 253.6-254.1 mg.g** (-1), in the 2nd 253.5-257.5 mg.g** (-1). Crude protein concentration increased proportionally with increasing N-rates, however, it was more expensive in the variants with periodic alternation of both PK and NPK fertilization, when compared with a regular, yearly, complete NPK fertilization.
