Growing coffee in north Queensland - an evaluation of bean size

Green bean size of a large number of arabica coffee cultivars from two north Queensland locations was evaluated over a three year period. Bean size was variable and smaller than similar lines grown in New South Wales under different environmental conditions. The most widely planted cultivar in north Queensland (Kairi Typica) had fewer large beans. Crop load did not affect bean size, but later maturing beans were larger. Commercial bean size in north Queensland is small due to time of flowering, sandy soils and stressful weather conditions especially during the critical period of rapid bean expansion. The choice of a cultivar with larger beans, such as Catuai Rojo which flowers and matures at a more favourable time, together with improved irrigation management, and measures to improve soil moisture retention should help improve bean size of north Queensland coffee.
