A severe degeneration of "Casablanca" lily induced by viruses [Tuscany]

English. The presence of a mixed infection of LSV (lily symptomless virus) and TBV (tulip breaking virus) in a cultivation of "Casablanca" lily in Tuscany (Northern Italy) is reported. The 90-95% of the infected plants showed chlorotic mosaic and yellow stripes on the leaves; the white flowers were normal in colour, but their size, as that of the bulbs, was reduced; no symptoms were present at the root level. The disease was spread only in this oriental cultivar and not in other two asiatic cultivars (Gran Sasso and Polyanna), growing under the same greenhouse conditions. Since all the bulbs of these three cultivars belonged to the same stock imported from Holland, it is clear that the source of the disease were infected bulbs. This severe degeneration, caused by LSV+TBV, is a dangerous threat to the Italian ornamental industry. The severity of this disease on lily represents a good example of the failure of sanitary controls on both exporting and importing countries on propagation materials

Viene segnalata la presenza contemporanea di LSV (virus latente del lilium: "lily symptomless virus") e TBV (virus della screziatura del tulipano: "tulip breaking virus") in una coltivazione di lilium orientale cv. Casablanca in Toscana. I sintomi manifestati dalle piante, in percentuale del 90-95%, consistevano in mosaico e striature clorotiche sulle foglie, piu' evidenti al momento della fioritura. I fiori, di colore bianco, apparivano asintomatici, ma di dimensioni ridotte e meno serbevoli; la taglia delle piante e dei bulbi era ridotta, mentre le radici apparivano normali come sviluppo e consistenza. I bulbi impiegati per l'impianto appartenevano ad un'unica partita importata dall'Olanda, costituita anche da bulbi delle cvs. asiatiche Gran Sasso e Polyanna, nella cui piante, pur coltivate nelle medesime condizioni, non si e' manifestata alcuna sintomatologia fogliare e/o fiorale. Si tratta della prima segnalazione di infezione da LSV+TBV in ibridi di lilium orientale la cui origine e' da ricercarsi nell'impiego di materiale vegetale importato non qualificato dal punto di vista sanitario
