A historical prospective of leaf protein research and assessment of future needs

This paper begins by reviewing important contributions to leaf protein (LP) research during three chronological periods: 1773 to 1939; 1940 to 1981; and 1982 to the present. The first period, known as the discovery era, was the age of pioneering work by Rouelle, Osborne, Chibnall, and Lugg who established the foundation for our present knowledge of leaf proteins. The advocacy era that followed was led by Pirie who focused research efforts on bulk extraction of LP and possibilities for incorporation of the protein into human diets. The enterprise era that began in 1982 shifted attention toward more applied research in the hope of increasing the economic viability of LP extraction. LP enterprises remain, at best, only marginally successful, however, and LP has yet to be accepted as a common component of peoples' diets. The paper concludes by identifying research areas that need to be addressed to remedy the present situation and move forward
