Developing and releasing persistent and productive lucernes to improve wool production in the pastoral zone

Gives results of a continuing breeding project and field trials to achieve an improved line of lucernes specifically for dryland pastures. The major outcome has been the evaluation and registration of a breeding line, 'Gemini' lucerne. It has shown excellent field performance, persistence, resistance to major diseases, resistance to some pests, and moderate resistance to the blue-green alfalfa aphid. It will provide benefits to the wool industry in the form of increased persistence and productivity in lucerne-based pastures within the next few years.
