The extent to which grain stored on-farm is infested by stored grain insects is presented, to determine whether the costs outweigh the benefits of moving to a greater reliance of on-farm storage. To quantify the likely costs of insect infestation and to improve farm management information concerning grain storage, a survey of 39 farms (63 individual blocks) in the Grong Grong district in southern NSW was conducted in 1985. The survey aimed to determine the influence of farm storage and handling practices on insect populations and levels of resistance. Pest control treatments used, types of grain storage, handling and transport equipment used together with grain types harvested and stored were recorded. Storage, handling and transport equipment were sampled for grain insects. The insects were identified, species and numbers were recorded and subsequently cultured and tested for resistance to various pesticides.
