The value of round-leafed cassia (Cassia rotundifolia cv. Wynn) in a native pasture grazed with steers in south-east Queensland

When sown into speargrass pastures cassia spread rapidly, and despite a reputation for low palatability, provided about 16 percent of the diet of grazing steers; their growth rate increased by about 40 percent. The further addition of superphosphate fertilizer improved growth rates by a further 10 percent. The N content of the speargrass was increased by 20 percent with cassia unfertilised, and 40 percent with added P. Analyses indicated that the site was deficient in sulfur.
