In solution culture over a range of initial P concentrations, isotope tracking was used to investigate the incorporation of P into soluble, lipid, and residue fractions of the 2 species. At low P, clover reduced its incorporation of P into lipids at later stages, corresponding to a decrease in relative growth rate. At high P, dry weight growth was related to the incorportion of P into lipids; clover had higher rates of both. The best correlation between dry weight and biochemical factors was the relationship with non-soluble (i.e. lipid plus residue) P content.
