Regulation mechanisms in the population dynamics of phytophagous pests

English. The proccsses by which the populations of plant pests in arable land are regulated are demonstrated by the population dynamics of two groups of animals which differ extremely with respect to their ecology: the cyst nematodes as representatives of stationary pests, and cereal aphids as representatives of migratory species which each year recolonize the field. - A well-functioning mechanism of selflimitation prevents the populations of cyst nematodes from destroying their own resources by overpopulation. The population level which cannot be surpassed depends essentially on the potential of increase which in turn is determined by the degree of susceptibility of the field crops: under resistent varieties the equilibrium density will be at a rather low level. The potential of increase can be lowered likewise by the administration of large quantities of organic matter. If high nematode densities are permanently present for a long time a community of natural enemies, consisting for a considerable part of nematode-parasitic fungi, will build up in the long run and produce a kind of decline-effect. This effect comes, however, with a considerable delay and is largely influenced by the external conditions. It is until now not possible, therefore, to exploit it purposefully. - Cereal aphids have an enormous potential of increase and can reach high population densities within very short time if they are not checked by natural enemies. Among these are the syrphids key factors. It depends on the speed of their aggregation response whether or not an aphid outbreak will occur.

Die Vorgaenge, durch welche die Populationen von Pflanzenschaedlingen auf Ackerstandorten reguliert werden, werden am Beispiel zweier hinsichtlich ihrer Oekologie extrem unterschiedlicher Tiergruppen dargestellt: den Zystennematoden als Vertretern extrem ortsgebundener Arten und den Getreideblattlaeusen als Vertretern migrierender Arten, die regelmaessig jedes Jahr die Ackerflaechen neu besiedeln. Eine gut funktionierende Selbstbegrenzung verhindert kurzfristig, dass die Populationen der Zystennematoden Dichten erreichen, bei denen sie ihre eigene Lebensgrundlage zerstoeren wuerden. Bei welcher Dichte diese Selbstbegrenzung das weitere Wachstum der Population verhindert, haengt wesentlich vom Vermehrungsdruck und damit indirekt von der Anfaelligkeit der angebauten Kulturpflanzen ab; unter resistenten Sorten stellt sich ein Gleichgewicht schon bei sehr niedrigem Niveau ein. Auch durch reichlichere Zufuhr organischer Substanz kann der Vermehrungsdruck gesenkt werden. Langfristig kann sich bei staendig hoher Nematodendichte ein starkes Gegenspielerpotential - zum erheblichen Teil aus nematoparasitaeren Pilzen bestehend - aufbauen und eine Art Decline-Effekt herbeifuehren. Allerdings tritt dieser sehr verspaetet ein und ist zudem stark von den jeweiligen Bedingungen abhaengig, so dass es bis jetzt nicht moeglich ist, ihn gezielt zu nutzen. Getreideblattlaeuse koennen infolge ihres enormen Vermehrungspotentials binnen kuerzester Frist hohe Populationsdichten erreichen, wenn ihnen nicht durch die Aktivitaet natuerlicher Gegenspieler Einhalt geboten wird.
