Because of the serious decline in the protein level of Australian wheats due to low levels of nitrogen available to plants, it was necessary to develop tests to monitor nitrogen levels in crops to assess the amount of fertilizer which should be applied to achieve a desired production level. The NIR test for protein levels in wheat is a reliable, quick, simple and cheap method to measure nitrogen content of wheat shoots. Detailed results and methods of the project undertaken to test this method of analysis are given.
