Discusses the effects of high rates of muriate of potash used in banana plantations on other interchangeable cations and the role of pH in maintaining the cation exchange capacity of the soil. The use of high rates of potassium in concentrated bands causes calcium and magnesium to be present as soluble ions in the soil, and lost to the plants. The importance of liming programmes is stressed to combat the adverse effects of potassium on calcium and magnesium loss from soil and plants.
