Prime lamb production: report on production systems studies, South Australia; report of the views of lamb producers and some implications for producing ELITE lamb

The Meat Research Corporation has embarked on "The Prime Lamb Project", with the goal of producing 25,000 tonnes of large lean (ELITE) lamb annually by 1994. Producers were optimistic that they could meet the market if the financial incentive was provided. However, few receive feedback from abattoirs on levels of fatness. Likely times for production are predominantly over the summer months. Recommencement of the live ram trade would affect supply. Under known management systems and genetic potential of sheep, only a proportion of each drop will grade ELITE. If export demand for ELITE lambs expands it will be difficult to supply the ELITE product without also a large number of overfat lambs which would need to be sold on the domestic market. The presence of the Tatiara Meat Company at Bordertown means South Australian producers have a ready market. The potential for South Australian producers to service additional markets is very limited. The areas on which the least knowledge was known or available to producers was how to manipulate the fatness of heavy weight lambs.
