Mortality in calves associated with the feeding of milk containing bronopol [2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol; cattle; case report]
1990
Hindmarsh, M. (South Australian Dept. of Agriculture, Naracoorte. South East Regional Veterinary Lab.)
Gastrointestinal lesions and deaths of 7 out of 8 Jersey heifer calves occurred following the feeding of milk containing bronopol. This is apparently the first report of such findings in Australia. The level of bronopol in the milk mixture fed was calculated to be 8 mg per kg. The presence of substantial amounts of bronopol in the abomasal content suggests that overdosing with bronopol caused the gastrointestinal, hepatic and renal changes observed, and the subsequent deaths.
