Interactions between microorganisms and invertebrate fauna in soils (Review)

Knowledge of the functional relations between soil fauna and microorganisms, and of their expression in organic matter decomposition, nutrient cycling and soil biological activity as a whole may have a significant consequence for the protection of a wide range of soil ecosystems. It will further contribute to a better understanding of the species diversity both of soil, animal and microbial communities, as well as provide recommendations for the biological control of plant diseases in soils. In this paper there are summarised and discussed results of three main possible interactions between microorganisms and invertebrate fauna in soil: 1. soil invertebrates directly affecting the structure of microbial communities, 2. soil animals affecting the function of microflora, 3. microflora influencing soil animals.
