Application of cable system during integrated felling

During electronically registered measurements, tractive forces were measured simultaneously both in tearing off the tree from the stump and in skidding. The measurements was carried out in a beech pole-stage stand. The width of the key (hinge) has to be maximally 1 cm in order the tree could be torn off from the stump (particularly in broadleaved species). The integrated method of felling provides a number of advantages in using the cable system. Felling direction is controlled with minimum effort. When using traditional methods of felling and subsequent skidding, the direction of cable pull changes so that to neighbouring trees is considerable in relation to stem length. The recommended method provides for the damage to neighbouring trees to be minimal because the tractive cable keeps the same direction both during felling and skidding. In addition to this, felling direction is controlled so that for skidding purposes, another cable handling is not necessary. Occupational safety in felling operations on steep slopes is, therefore, increased.
