Availability and uptake of boron in a group of pedogenetically-related Canterbury, New Zealand soils

Amounts of B extracted from 6 of the soils by hot water (HW), hot 0.02 M CaCl2 (HC), 0.01 m CaCl2 + 0.05 M mannitol (CM), and a B-specific resin (R) were significantly correlated with each other. HW and HC yielded higher levels of extractable B than did CM and R. B extracted by all 4 reagents was significantly correlated with soil organic C (and to a lesser extent clay content), but not with soil pH. All 4 extractants were shown in glasshouse pot experiments to be suitable for assessing the B available to radishes. Decreased yields occurred in soils with HW or HC extractable B levels less than 1.1 microg per g and were associated with a progressively lower allocation of dry matter to roots. For analytical purposes, HC provided the most convenient measure of available B.
