Options of feeding meals from fly pupae and algae to Japanese quail

The effect of feeding meals made from fly pupae and dried algae was investigeted in adult Japanese quail with respect to their performance. Control group received basic mash, while 3 groups received mash where a third, two thirds and all of fish meal (6 %) were replaced by aliquot proportions of fly pupae meal. In 2 groups meal from dried algae replaced 2 % and 4 % of soybean meal. Fly pupae meal replaced up to two thirds of dietary fish meal without any negative effect on egg production and weight. Replacement of all fish meal resulted in retardation of egg laying and egg mass. The yolk portion was significantly higher beginning the feeding of 4 % content of pupae. The yolk color was more intensive after replacement of all fish meal. The increasing percentage of algae in feed mash decreased egg production without any negative effect on their average weight. Algae feeding (4 %) reduced albumen weight any yolk portion and egg shape index. The largest differences were recorded for the intensity of egg yolk color when the rising percentage of algae proportionally increased the intensity of its color.
