Drought stress induces changes in the non-structural carbohydrate composition of wheat stems
1991

In glasshouse experiments, the non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) composition of subdivided stems of well-watered and drought stressed wheat was determined during grain filling. The NSC content of the unsheathed portion of the peduncle and the pulvinus increased threefold under drought, and the water-soluble carbohydrate: ethanol-soluble carbohydrate ratio was lower than the rest of the stem, but still declined noticeably. Turgor was fully maintained in the penultimate internode and in the pulvinus of droughted plants.
