Stuart, R.D. | Midgley, C.A. | Kelly, T.J. (Tasmanian Dept. of Primary Industry (Australia))
The history and current status of the industry in Tasmania is described. The production of deer is examined, covering; breeding activities; live capture; commercial production; and production profitability. Slaughter and processing establishments and marketing activities are described. Major trends and industry development issues are also examined. The majority of the 71 deer farms in Tasmania are recently established and are vulnerable due to prevailing impediments. With effective cooperation and support there could be growth towards a potential value-added output well in excess of 10 million Australian dollars per annum.
