Fusarium toxins in oats, MTT test and toxigenicity of cladosporia
1995
Mueller, H.-M. | Modi, R. | Schumacher, U. | Spiri-Nakagawa, P.
Extracts from oat samples were assayed for Fusarium toxins and for their cytotocicity in a cell culture (MTT) test. The toxicity measured directly was compared with the toxicity calculated from toxin concentrations. This calculation was done using dose effect curves obtained with pure toxins and by graphical determination of the toxicity of the sum of "DON equivalents". Between 34 and 71 % of extracts were cytotoxic though no toxicity could be derived for these extracts from their content in Fusarium toxins. This may have been due to the presence of other mycotoxins, e.g. toxins produced by Cladosporium moulds. A total of39 Cladosporium strains belonging mainly to C. cladosporioides and C. herbarum was isolated from oats. Each of these strains produced substance(s) during growth in pure culture on oats which proved toxic in the MTT test.
