Effects of exposure of wheat ears to high temperature on dry matter accumulation and carbohydrate metabolism in the grain of two cultivars, 1. Immediate responses

Ears of 2 cultivars known to differ in their tolerance of post-anthesis heat were exposed for up to 7 days during grain-filling to a day-night regime of 35-25 deg C. Compared to ears maintained at 21-16 deg. C.: dry matter accumulation in both cultivars increased slightly; sucrose content of the endosperm was almost unaffected; fructose was reduced, while glucose was if anything slightly increased; hexose phosphates were reduced to a similar extent as was fructose; and as also was UDP-glucose, a byproduct of the sucrose-synthase reaction. Temperature had clearly resulted in changes to the sucrose synthase system, but how it had affected it was not clear. There was no indication of the basis for the known difference in cultivar response.
