Trace analysis of the Fusarium mycotoxin Beauvericin in corn

Beauvericin (BEA), a cyclic hexadepsipeptide, is a mycotoxin, which has been discovered only recently to occur naturally in preharvest Fusarium subglutinans infected corn from Poland. The limit of detection of the existing analytical methods for determination of Beauvericin in corn is limited to 5 mg/kg. In this paper a method is described enabling the detection of Beauvericin down to 50 ug/kg. It involves extraction with methanol-aqueous NaCl followed by extraction with methylene chloride and solid phase extraction clean-up. Quantification is carried out by a UV-Diode Array Detector (DAD) set at 190 and 209 nm, respectively after separation by High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
