Compared in trials with the Lane and Eynon and Boeringer-Mannheim methods, the cryoscopic method was the most precise, had the best recovery (99 percent) and was the only method which did not require prior clarification of proteins. A regression equation with a correlation coefficient of 0.997 was derived for calculation of lactose content. Application of the method to 15 samples of UHT whole milk from 4 Australian manufacturers revealed a mean content of lactose monohydrate of 4.62 percent.
