Solid state CP-MAS 13C NMR analysis of particle size and density fractions of a soil incubated with uniformly labelled 13C-glucose

After correcting for spin lattice relaxation time effects, a significant linear relationship existed between the signal intensity and the 13C content of the samples tested. This enabled the content, expressed in micromol 13C per g fraction, of each type of C in the fractionated samples to be calculated. The residual substrate C after incubation for 34 days was found to accumulate in predominately alkyl and O-alkyl structures in both fractions. Little if any aromatic or phenolic C was synthesized by the soil microorganisms utilizing substrate C. Essentially all of the O-alkyl and acetal C, 25-40 percent of the aromatic C and 66-80 percent of the alkyl C was protonated in the fractions isolated from the treated soil.
