[Water balance and wetlands in a dry landscape - State - Conflicts - Measure]

The glacially formed North-East German lowlands are characterized by a low precipitation rate (P = 450...650 mm per a) and a greater part of wetlands. Fen areas, lakes, small glacially shaped ponds (Soelle), spring biotopes and river lowlands occupy about 15...20% of the region as a whole. The wetlands show a negative climatic water balance and receive their water by groundwater from neighbouring sandy tributaries to fen areas, from surface runoff to the small ponds (Soelle) and from floods of the rivers Oder and Elbe. Wetlands in North East Germany are mostly damaged by drainage, intensive agriculture and river construction measure. The further existence of wetlands is endangered. Conservation and rewetting of wetlands need measure of water retention in the landscape instead of drainage, as well as sustainable land use practices
