The role of taxonomy and herbarium in the conservation of food crops
1995
Salma Idris (MARDI, Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). Basic Research Div.)
Plant taxonomy deals with identification, classification and nomenclature of plants and is important in research and communication. Genetic resources of food crops conserved in the genebanks consist of crop plants and their wild relatives. These genebank accessions need to be named correctly, precisely and reliably characterised and systematically documented. The herbarium is both a collection of dried plants and educational and research centre. It serves as a permanent reference collection for voucher specimens and also as a source of information on potentially useful plants and their exploitation, and it also plays an important role in conservation of food crops and biodiversity
